The KJCC’s Fridays on the Patio Program welcomes NYU Steel this week for a lecture on Steel Drum followed by a live performance!
NYU Steel was founded in 2005 and since then has served to educate NYU students on Trinidad and Tobago’s culture, history, and music. We will be joined by the program’s co-directors Josh Quillen and Kendall K. Williams, along with this year’s TA Benji Prickett.
Josh is an avid steel drummer and educator, as well as a member of the contemporary percussion ensemble, So Percussion.
Kendall, an NYU alumnus, currently runs Pan in Motion, a non-profit advocacy group in Brooklyn supporting the steel pan arts from the Caribbean diaspora. A virtuoso player and arranger, Kendall arranges for many large steel bands in Brooklyn as well as Trinidad and Tobago.
Benji is a current senior at NYU finishing his percussion studies. He will be going to Trinidad and Tobago in January to perform Holst’s “The Planets” alongside Kendall and Josh with the University of Trinidad and Tobago and Mia Gormandy-Benjamin.
