Mary Ann Newman

Mary Ann Newman is a translator, independent scholar, and cultural administrator who works to make Catalan culture more accessible to the North American public, highlighting the work produced by Catalan artists and creators in North America. She is the founder of the Farragut Fund for Catalan Culture in the U.S., was the founding director of The Catalan Center at New York University (2006-2011) and the Catalan Studies Program at New York University (1983-1986). Her translations include essays by Xavier Rubert de Ventós, fiction by Quim Monzó, and poetry by Josep Carner. Her most recent translation is Private Life, a 1932 Catalan classic by Josep Maria de Sagarra (Archipelago Books, 2015), for which she won the Premi J. B. Cendrós 2017 from Òmnium Cultural and the North American Catalan Society Prize 2017. She was awarded the Creu de Sant Jordi in 1998, and was named President-delegate of the Premi Internacional Catalunya in 2019. She is currently organizing the second online Sant Jordi NYC Book Festival, developing an intensive course in Catalan for speakers of Romance Languages that incorporates translation techniques, and planning a project on the culture of the Mediterranean Diet.
