In this talk, Sebastián Figueroa explores the perversions of agro-capitalism in Lina Meruane’s Fruta podrida (2007), Samanta Schweblin’s Distancia de rescate (2014) and Juan Cárdenas’ El diablo de las provincias (2017). He sets his reading of these novels in historical dialogue with the genesis and development of agro-industry in Latin American literature, and link their representation of the vegetal world to contemporary discussions about ecological Marxism, post-humanism, and new materialism. His contention is that these novels show the crisis in the production and reproduction of life under the New Green Revolution as well as the new arrangements of nature and culture in the Anthropocene.
